Really the hardest part for me was the mental discipline. Your body wants to tell you something is amiss and you have to retrain it. Maybe I also have a bit of lucky nerve placement. I found starting with something small and not long, gently and slowly, after a good orgasm helps. Even slightly long fingernails are not comfy at all. I think the n-joy was a good starting place because it applied weight and stimulus that I could also feel vaginally, but it did not hold me "open." The lubes that help numb a little also work to make those earlier times feel less like you need to suddenly excuse yourself. :) Lots and lots of lube is good.
